Let's be clear about this: banks are in the business of making money off your money. And so far as they're concerned, anything they can do which lets them generate more revenue while restricting your ability to access or use your assets in "inconvenient" ways... why, that's a good thing.

I tell ya, you're maybe better off stashing your savings in a coffee can buried in the back yard than trying to come out ahead via American financial institutions.
