There are sure signs of autumn around here: leaves changing colors and dropping, days getting shorter, the sun vanishing behind pea-soup fog and unending overcast, bundles of firewood and manufactured fire logs showing up at the grocery stores (along with truckloads of pumpkins), and small swarms of kids all coming home from school at the same time.

But the big sign in my household that fall is upon us? The cats are eating half again as much food as they did in summer.
