Sleepy Boys

Abhi and Pugsley Snoozing Sleepy boys.

Folks sometimes say cats can sleep through anything - that they may spend 20 or more hours a day napping. Adult cats do spent many hours lounging around conserving their energy, but I think they spend far less time per day in deep sleep than humans. Cats seem very aware of their environment when they're napping: I've watched the ears of my sleeping cats track me as I walk across the room and perk up at the sound of pigeons alighting on the roof of the building next door. If you think your cats are out for the count, rattle your bag of cat treats (or open a can, if your cats are on wet food) and notice how quickly they turn up at your feet, mewling away.

That said, when Pugsley's deep in dreamland, he snores like a longshoreman sleeping off a three-day bender. Except the longshoreman's whiskers probably don't twitch in such an entertaining a way.
