| Browser Requirements |
The HyperCard mailing list archive requires a frames-capable browser.
JavaScript is helpful when using this archive, but it's not required. The archive uses JavaScript to make thread menus a easier to use, to display tips, and to determine whether material in the archive is being viewed as part of the appropriate frameset. If you turn off JavaScript, thread listings and messages will identify themselves as being part of the HyperCard mailing list archive.
The HyperCard mailing list archive is designed to work with recent versions of major Web browsers on 640 by 480 and larger screens. It's been tested with 3.x and 4.x versions of Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer for Macintosh and Windows; some limited testing was also done from Unix systems. You may see layout and presentation changes if you view the archive from various browsers and platforms; the archive tries to adapt to different browsers and window sizes. The HyperCard mailing list archive works with (but has not been optimized for) Cyberdog 2.0.
| Message Lists |
Message lists returned by a search or link within the archive will be sorted by discussion thread. The most recent threads will appear at the top of the list, and the first listed message in each thread will be tagged with a symbol:
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| » | The message is the originator (initial message) of a thread |
| · | The message isn't the originator of the thread, just the first message in that thread meeting the current search criteria |
Where possible, the archive will try to label message lists so you have an idea what query produced the list (e.g., searching for "iMac" in subject, searching for messages from "Geoff").
| Individual Messages |
Individual messages in the archive are displayed in a monospaced font. Any URLs or email addresses (see below) appearing in the message are converted into clickable links by the import program; the importer also hard-wraps text if necessary. Every message will have an email address associated with it; if the sender didn't include a name with their address, the email address will be used in place of a name. All message dates are displayed in terms of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
If a message is part of a larger thread, the message will feature a pop-up menu listing the authors of other messages in the thread, in order. You can use it to quickly skip to a particular message in a thread (say, to see a quote in its original context). You can also move through messages in a thread serially using arrow buttons.
| Email Addresses |
Email addresses appearing in the HyperCard mailing list archive are clickable; however, no "@" symbols are shown to prevent easy harvesting by programs that trawl the Web for email addresses. Instead, "@" symbols are replaced with another character. Most email programs will still create a new message when you click one of these addresses; however, you'll need to manually insert the "@" symbol to send the message.
The archive also takes steps to prevent sending any data whatsoever to known trawling programs.
